Voluntary Benefits
Voluntary benefits provide financial security for your employees by augmenting employer-paid benefits. They have become a crucial component of the benefit package and a valuable tool in attracting and retaining talent. Offered at discounted group rates, and paid through pre-taxed payroll deductions, voluntary benefits are most often purchased solely by employees and are at little or no cost to employers. Voluntary benefits are generally customized by the employee to fit his/her needs and fall into the following categories:
Voluntary Health & Wellness Benefits
These benefits often complement core health insurance plans. Examples include vision insurance and dental insurance which cover routine exams, preventative and restorative services, eye glasses, lenses, and more. Accident insurance, hospital indemnity and critical illness insurance are all plans that provide cash benefits directly to the policyholder for a qualifying accident, injury, illness or hospital stay to cover various expenses such as medical bills, living expenses, or lost wages. Gap insurance supplements health insurance and pays a significant amount of the deductible on a major medical plan.
Voluntary Financial Wellness Benefits
These benefits can help employees manage their finances and plan for the future. Examples include term or permanent life insurance which pays a death benefit to a named beneficiary in the even of death of the employee, and some life policies build a cash value that can be used for life’s milestones. Short term or long term disability insurance replaces the employee’s income should they become unable to work due to a qualifying illness or injury.
Voluntary Security or Personal Benefits
These benefits are designed to provide employees with additional financial protection and peace of mind, and cater to employees’ personal lives. Examples include Identity Shield and Legal Shield. Services covered are protection against identity theft and legal issues. Identity Shield provides monitoring of personal information, fraud alerts, and restoration services, while Legal Shield offers access to attorneys for various legal matters, including employment law, consumer protection, and more.
